Country Topical Files, 1927-1987.

Country topical files (1927-1987) of the News Bureau of the Department of Public Relations/Office of Communication and Interpretation contain news releases, news paper articles, reports, memoranda, telegrams, statements, and publications concerning activities of individual Lutherans and Lutheran churches, agencies, associations, and organizations from countries around the world. Records also concern the relief and cooperative activities of U.S. Lutherans in foreign countries. The collection includes files regarding Africa (including Namibia and Tanzania), Asia, Australia, Austria, the Baltic States, Canada, Ethiopia, East/West Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Japan, Latin America, the Middle East, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Taiwan, USSR, and Vietnam. Also, Alaska and Hawaii, two U.S. States, have files as well as. Occasional country-specific topics and All-Africa, All-Asia and Latin American Lutheran Conferences and a few Lutheran church mergers. News releases in the collection are primarily from the news bureaus of the Lutheran Council in the USA (LCUSA) and its predecessor body, the National Lutheran Council (NLC)(1918-1966); the NLC and LCUSA participating church bodies; and the Religious News Service. Other news release sources include Lutheran World Federation; other U.S., foreign, or international Lutheran organizations; non-Lutheran churches; and national and international ecumenical organizations.

The American Lutheran Church (1961-1987) was formed by the merger of the American Lutheran Church (1930-1960), the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the United Evangelical Lutheran Church.
